2017-2018 Concentration

I am investigating the difference between natural objects and man-made objects in their abilities to restrict or eliminate light. Like light, charcoal bathes the whole body when working with the medium. However, light can be interrupted by natural and man-made objects and can prevent the subject from being fully bathed by the light. In number 1, a girl is stands in natural light, a tree’s branches casting shadows on her face. Those shadows prevent her from becoming fully illuminated by the light. Likewise in number 4, except for the shadow of the rope created by the projector’s light, the subject would have been fully drenched in the light. However, this man-made object, a rope, interacts in a different manner with its light source than the tree’s branches do with the sun. The tree’s branches, found shadows, are natural objects interacting with a natural source of light and eliminate light differently than the made shadows of the rope and the projector.
